Gary Public Library’s newest program, Art Girls – Smart Girls! is an ongoing program designed to help girls who are creative in the arts but need extra help in math and science. We are looking for enthusiastic educators that are willing to tutor our young people (grades 3rd – 12th ) in math and science.

Participants will have an opportunity to receive tutoring in math and science as well as learn about and create works of art. For more information or to volunteer as a tutor, contact 886-2484 ext. 311.

Gary Library to offer eBooks

  Gary, IN - Gary Public Library will soon expand its services with

eBooks and audiobooks available October 15. 

      Powered by OverDrive, this new free service will be available

through the library’s website, www.garypubliclibrary.org.  There, patrons

will be able to check out and download best selling and classic titles onto

their PC,  Mac®, or onto many mobile devices.

      To get started, you will need an Internet connection and a valid

Gary Public Library library card. Patrons will also need a library card PIN

number, currently only available in person at your local Gary Public

Library unit.

Du Bois Library to Open at 9am Four Days a Week

Gary, IN - Effective Monday, October 1, the  Du Bois Library of the Gary Public Library will open an hour earlier Monday through Thursday.

Hours of service for Du Bois will be Monday through Thursday 9am to 8pm; and Friday and Saturday, noon to 4pm.

Service hours remain unchanged at the branches:

Brunswick Branch, 4030 W. 5th Avenue, Monday - Thursday noon -8pm; Friday and Saturday noon - 4pm

Kennedy Branch, 3953 Broadway, Monday-Thursday noon-8pm; Friday & Saturday 10am-5pm.

Woodson Branch, 501 S. Lake St. Monday-Thursday noon-8pm; Friday & Saturday 10am-5pm.

Main Library & Tolleston Branch Closing

    Gary, IN  - At their March 28 Board Meeting, the Gary Public Library Board of Trustees approved the permanent closing of the Main Library, 220 W. 5th Avenue and the Tolleston Branch, 1113 Taft Street, effective January 1, 2012.  

     Library programs, activities and services will continue at all branches including the Main Library with the exception of the Tolleston Branch. The Tolleston Branch has been closed since November 2010 and is not expected to reopen this year.

Increase in Fines & Fees

The Gary Public Library Board of Trustees has approved an increase in fines and fees, to take effect January 1, 2011, for most of the Library’s services at all library units. Among the increases will be the fees for meeting rooms, library card replacement, computer print outs, and fax service. Fines for overdue, lost or damaged materials including books, dvds and Playaways will also increase. A complete list is available at each library unit and on the library’s website.

Woodson Renaming and Open House

Gary, IN - The public is invited to attend the renaming ceremony

and open house for the Gary Public Library’s Carter G. Woodson Branch
Library, 501 S. Lake Street, Tuesday, November 23 at 11am. Refreshments
provided by the Friends of the Gary Public Library. The library is open for
service at noon. Woodson (1875-1950), known as the "Father of Black History,"
initiated Negro History Week in 1926. It was later expanded in 1976 to
include the entire month of February and is now known as Black History
Month.

The Gary Public Library Board of Trustees approved the name
change earlier this year from the Wildermuth Branch to the Carter G.
Woodson Branch. For more information about Carter G. Woodson, please
stop in at any Gary Public Library unit.
