         Graffiti aHead: Portraits of the Midwest Graffiti/Street Artists by Felix Maldonado, has been extended through April 30 at the Gary Public Library and Cultural Center, 220 W. 5th Avenue, Main Art Gallery, 2nd floor.

         Maldonado has started painting a mural for the Gary Public Library that reflects the character, culture and history of Gary, Indiana. The mural is located in the Public Study area of the Gary Public Library and Cultural Center, 2nd floor. The public is invited to stop in and view the mural in progress. The library is open Monday – Thursday 9am – 8pm, Friday & Saturday 9am – 5pm.                   

           About his exhibit, Graffiti aHead: Portraits of the Midwest Graffiti/Street Artist, Maldonado, also known as FLEX, has chosen these people to paint because of his admiration and respect for not only the culture but also its importance of documentation. 

           About these larger than life portraits, Maldonado writes, “The detail in the faces of the subjects is made with care but also with a spontaneous and physical manner synonymous to the medium they all use; the spray can.”

            A native of East Chicago, Indiana, Felix is a self-taught artist with more than 25 years experience in painting, drawing and gra­ffiti art. In 1995, he received his BFA in Advertising with a minor in Graphic Design from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He has worked at several ad agencies in Chicago directing and producing commercials for companies like Culligan Water, Peoples Energy, Roto-Rooter, Head Tennis and ATA Airlines.

            Maldonado is currently known for his murals of the Jackson 5, in both Gary’s Miller section and on Broadway.

The public is invited to attend the Gary Public Library’s Annual Black History Program, Saturday, February 17, 3pm at the Gary Public Library and Cultural Center, 220 W. 5th Avenue.

The program is FREE and will feature a performance titled The Meeting, written by Jeff Stetson and directed by Mark Spencer of the West Side Theater Guild.

Refreshments will be served. Library service ends at 5pm on Saturdays.

“Visionaries That Changed Our History” is the 2018 theme.

     The Gary Public Library and Cultural Center, 220 W. 5th Avenue is scheduled to open to the public on Saturday, January 27, 2018.  A ribbon cutting and open house will be held from 9am – 2pm. The public is invited to attend.

     The renovated former Main Library building includes a 100-seat theatre and a spacious community room with kitchen. Both will be available to rent for community programs, social events and functions.

      A new computer lab for adults provides 41 computers and the children’s computer lab provides 20 computers.  A wi-fi lounge with vending machines is also located on the main floor. Other public areas include a tutoring lab, Friends Store, 2nd floor study area, additional gallery space and new Indiana Room of local history.

The Gary Public Library is asking for the public’s input on images to be included on a mural to be created for the Gary Public Library and Cultural Center, 220 W. 5th Ave.

Submission forms are available at all library units or the library’s website, www.garypubliclibrary.org and may include famous Garyites, Garyites who have made great contributions, etc.

Names/images chosen will be based on how well they reflect the character, culture, and history of Gary, Indiana.

Deadline for submissions is January 3, 2018.

Brunswick Branch Closes October 1

      Gary, IN - The Brunswick Branch of the Gary Public Library, 4030 W. 5th Avenue will be permanently closed on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 4pm. The Library Board of Trustees approved the permanent closure of the Brunswick Branch and the Du Bois Library at their June 28 Board meeting due to budget constraints.

     The Du Bois Library is expected to close after the renovated Gary Public Library and Cultural Center, 220 W. 5th Avenue, opens. That date has yet to be determined.

     After October 1, patrons are encouraged to use the library’s other branches: Du Bois Library 1835 Broadway, 886-9120, Monday – Thursday 9am - 8pm, Friday & Saturday 9am - 5pm; Kennedy Branch 3953 Broadway 887-8112, Monday 10am - 6pm, Wednesday & Thursday noon - 8pm, Saturday 10am - 4pm, closed Tuesday & Friday; and Woodson Branch, 501 S. Lake Street, 938-3941, Monday & Thursday noon - 8pm, Tuesday 10am - 6pm, Saturday 10am - 4pm, closed Wednesday & Friday.

Gary Public Library’s newest program, Art Girls – Smart Girls! is an ongoing program designed to help girls who are creative in the arts but need extra help in math and science. We are looking for enthusiastic educators that are willing to tutor our young people (grades 3rd – 12th ) in math and science.

Participants will have an opportunity to receive tutoring in math and science as well as learn about and create works of art. For more information or to volunteer as a tutor, contact 886-2484 ext. 311.

  Gary, IN - Gary Public Library will soon expand its services with

eBooks and audiobooks available October 15. 

      Powered by OverDrive, this new free service will be available

through the library’s website, www.garypubliclibrary.org.  There, patrons

will be able to check out and download best selling and classic titles onto

their PC,  Mac®, or onto many mobile devices.

      To get started, you will need an Internet connection and a valid

Gary Public Library library card. Patrons will also need a library card PIN

number, currently only available in person at your local Gary Public

Library unit.
